I decided on a black and gold checkerboard thinking that would cover what i needed to cover and be a neutral pattern.

Pudel searched online until she found a bold graphic in a similar pattern printed it out and made a stencil that would allow her to create a custom pattern for her 5 x 7 rug.

I would roll on a coat of flat latex paint red maybe let it dry for a full 48 hours to avoid bleed then stencil a big design flowers or stripes then a quick 2 coats of spray urethane gorgeous indoors or out super durable easy to clean.
Instead of spending the money on a brand new rug she painting her existing sisal to get the same look.
It would be much more challenging to try to do curved or detailed designs.
