Obviously it s more challenging to do gray on red oak than white oak due to pink undertones on red oak.
Can you avoid the pink hue in red oak floors.
The sapwood is white to light brown and the heartwood is pink to reddish brown.
Red oak will always have that slight pink tone if you choose a lighter color this one was refinished from a dark brown to this natural finish.
Test a small area of the floor with stain before beginning whole to check appearance because color can sometimes vary from samples in store.
Both are red oak but the original floor in its raw state had a more red tone to it while the kitchen floor had a more pink orange tone to it.
Bleaching the floor first is also an option but not one i would recommend.

The wood usually has straight grain.
The living room floor is part of the original hardwood floor that s almost 70 years old.
They have a greyish pinkish tone to me in some of the pics and the actual sample i saw had way too much pink to suit me.
Red oak undergoes a medium degree of colour change over time with a slight ambering of the pink tan brown colour you get when freshly.
But also this was another patch job.
If you don t mind the pinkish tone do this.

The kitchen floor is only two years old.
It s probably possible but i wouldn t recommend adding anything to it unless the manufacturer tells you it is compatible your flooring is brand new and the red color will be sharp until it naturally gains a patina three years from now all that red will have more of an amber shade to it.
Over time they lightened and mellowed more a golden color we have oil base poly.
Maybe you can get a light golden cover to shift the pink a bit.
Green or the ash tones will tend to cancel out some of the red.
To downplay the red tone pick a neutral or ash based color nothing with red in it.
It is hard and durable and it takes a wide range of coloured stains quite easily.
You could experiment with some different stains on scrap.
Then you can choose a wall colour there are many different colours you could choose i would simply avoid orange or pink.
